HISTORY

Until the 18th century Delft was a major industrial, cultural and scientific center. Beer from Delft was famous and so was its pottery (Delft Blue). The Delft school of painting counted many renewed artists like Johannes Vermeer, Jan Steen and Willelm van Aelst. But Delft was also the home town of the scientist Antoni Van Leeuwenhoek and the lawyer Hugo Grotius.

In 1842 the Royal Academy for the training of civil engineers was established. In 1905 this Polytechnical School was made a technical university, in 1986 it was renamed Delft University of Technology. Delft engineers have played a great role, politically as well as socially in The Netherlands. In 1984 the Delft engineer Simon van der Meer was awarded the Nobelprize for physics.
